WRITTEN BY MICHELE HANSEN
Jesus Christ (God) is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8, NIV)
So, when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul,a hopethat enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 6:17-19 , ESV)
Many of the verses in the bible speak about having unwavering faith. And not just faith, but all aspects of the Christian walk. It is He who is unwavering in who He is and that we can rely on all these things in our faith. God causes us to be unwavering as we walk and grow with Him because He is unwavering, solid, unchanging, the same now as before and as He will be.
There is another word that I discovered one day during my devotions. Immutable. This is the never changing nature of God. He is immutable. God said of Himself in Malachi 3:6, “I the Lord do not change.”
When it comes to living in this always changing, helter-skelter world, we need the assurance of something we can always count on. The Word of God says that He is the solid rock, a firm foundation on which we can stand. We read these words and they make sense to us. We even believe that it is very much a reality. But do believers live like this is true? Do I live like this is true?
God created us for relationship. We are not our own idea. I dare say we have not evolved from apes. We were created specifically for a purpose. All the nations of the world have only minute variations in their DNA that scientists even say point to a single ancestor. Adam and Eve. (POV)
When paradise got tanked by pride and the whole of humanity fell into sin as a result of one man’s choice, it might have looked suspiciously like God didn’t have all His ducks in a row. Ah, but all His ducks were in perfect attendance. It was man that wavered, not God.
As human beings, we vacillate from one thing to another. I get the image of hummingbirds fighting over a feeder. Tough little nuggets they are, but many times they are so worried about keeping other birds away, that while they chase one, another comes in for a sip. They zip here and there, not siting still for more than a moment.
We zip from one thing to another as well. We are flighty, prideful, undecided, not to mention the fact that even the strongest of believers struggle with faith and trust. We know the scripture says we aren’t able to live the standard of perfection God requires. There is only One, Jesus. From the beginning of time, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit decided to make man in their image. The God of the universe has not changed His mind.
It is virtually impossible to try to imagine the God of the universe being indecisive. He knows all the things, from beginning to end, for absolutely everything and everyone, for all time and in between. Nothing is outside His awareness. The hairs on our head, the sparrow, the Lillys of the field, the planets, the universe, the galaxies, are all present and accounted for in the grand purview of the Lord.
I don’t know what heaven, or forever, or all things faith will be like when it’s all said and done. I only know that when all the things that can be shaken and destroyed are all faded away, God still is. He is the solid foundation that can’t be shaken and He has invited us to be with Him forever in our eternal home with Him.
That is our God. Unwavering. You can count on it.
