Reset to Zero

I’m reminded that today is the 13th of the month. The 13th is usually a big day for our family. There are no birthdays on the 13th of any month in our immediate family. No anniversaries either. The 13th of each month is the day that the data plans for our phones refresh. Without doing a thing, the data usage on our phones automatically resets to zero.

That may not seem like a really significant thing, but it is. It’s surprising how often we’re using data when we’re not on a wi-fi network. I could be streaming TobyMac while I’m driving. Sheila could be looking something up on the web while out and about. Hazel most certainly is snap-chatting-this or instagramming-that to one of her friends. And Jon? Undoubtedly, he’s laughing while watching some Minecraft-oriented video. The point is… we use a lot of data. Last month was no exception. With a two week vacation, we were often on the road and our data usage skyrocketed. We easily went over our monthly allotment.

Recently, I’ve been in the books of Leviticus and Numbers in my devotions. There are so many references to rituals and routines related to purification and becoming clean from sin and uncleanliness. Without going into a lot of detail there are so many regulations to the sacrificing of one item, burning of another, the sprinkling of yet another item to become clean, to reset their sins to zero.

As I sat doing my devotions this morning, I was instantly struck with the correlation of our data resetting to zero is a lot like our relationship with our Savior. There are times when my anger will get the best of me. I know that I’m going to make mistakes. What’s sweet to me is that when I go to my God, sit at His feet and humbly repent and ask for forgiveness. I no longer have to go through the rituals that the Israelites did in the Old Testament. Just like my data usage, I am reset to zero in His eyes. The cross made that possible.

Thank you Father.
