Praying During Political Times

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people.  Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.  Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by Godliness and dignity.  This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. (2 Timothy 2:1-4)

“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.” (Psalms 118:9)

When we pray and intercede for the election process of our nation, we invite the Lord into the process of electing those leaders who will in the end allow us to live the peaceful and quiet in Godliness and dignity as mentioned in 2 Timothy.  It is our desire that as the church body, we pray for the process of electing leaders without introducing the decisiveness that may come when we include our opinions about a particular candidate or political party.  Our desire with prayer is to petition our Father that his will be done here on earth as it is in heaven and for his selection to come forward, not ours.  With that in mind, we encourage others to adopt the guidelines outlined below.

• Be respectful of others that may be with you.  Not everyone has the same political views or candidates.

• Please refrain from mentioning candidates by name. God knows who you’re talking about.

• Please do not pray for victory or defeat for a certain political party. That’s not why we pray.

• Leave your opinion at home.

• Continually ask that the Holy Spirit would infiltrate your heart as you pray and show you how to pray for the process.
