(The everlasting I Am) John 8:48-59
The always, never-ending consistency of the Lord is a hard concept for our finite minds to wrap around. It’s one of those things we accept by faith even as it is incomprehensible… this is the SOP of the Lord and His righteousness.
Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
In the passage taken from John 8:48-59, Jesus is having a lively conversation with a group of individuals called the Pharisees. This passage of scripture has the depth of the Mariana Trench (the depths of which have never been plumbed) and the expanse of the universe, of which, well, we haven’t gone there either. We will never get there from here.
Jesus makes the case for His eternal existence by speaking through a megaphone of absolute “blasphemous”, human mind-bending truth that could not; that would not, be accepted by the religious authorities of the time.
The Pharisees basically said, “Just who in the scroll written reality do you think you are?!” “You’re possessed!!” “How in the 10 commandments do you think you know Abraham!?”
Well, Jesus let’em have it right between the Phylacteries. In verses 54-56 Jesus called them liars, called Himself God, said Abraham was tickled pink that he saw Jesus coming to earth to save mankind suggesting that it was in heaven that their conversation took place and basically blew their minds…all they could do was get so mad that they started picking up stones to kill Him…
Ya, that didn’t happen either.
I Am. The name of God that the religious people would never dare to suggest they address Him as. The Self-Existent One. The Holy, Alpha-Omega, beginning and end…Jesus dared to call Himself God.
How dare He! Oh…He dared, all right.
One of the always unchanging realities of Jesus is that He is the Word. He is the life. He is the one who holds all things together, by the word. The Word was spoken and then it created. That immense unchanging power continues today.
Ecclesiastes 1:9 says, What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
